When you visit your neighborhood tanning salon, you are given a wide selection of options for tanning. You can choose the sunless route and opt for an airbrushed spray tan, or you can choose between a stand-up or lay-down tanning bed. For many people, beds are the preferred choice since they have been around for so long, but with the new innovative tanning bed technologies available today, many salons are adding stand-up versions as well.

With this new tanning option, many people are interested but confused about the difference between standup and laydown tanning booths. If you are one of these people, continue reading and decide for yourself which bed meets your tanning preferences.

Tanning Booth Preferences

Overall, both versions of tanning beds are very effective and comfortable, making the choice entirely up to personal preference. In all cases, it is important to discuss your tanning goals with your salon’s tanning consultant to ensure you always tan safely. Here are the major differences and similarities between stand-up tanning beds and lay-down tanning beds:

Lay-Down Booths

Lay-down tanning booths are very popular because they are known for relaxation. You can simply lay, rest, and tan in a matter of minutes. But because you are laying on glass, pressure points are created between the skin and the bed, which prevents the UV-rays from fully soaking into the skin. This can cause tanning creases and lighter areas under the arms, on the shoulder blades, above and below the buttocks, and more. To avoid this in a laydown bed, you need to adjust your position periodically, which is easier in a stand up booth.

Stand-Up Tanning Beds

Stand-up booths offer more space, which allows tanners to move around easier. Inside the booth, you can raise your arms, lower your arms, bend your legs, lean, turn your head, and so forth. The bulbs are often stronger, delivering a faster tan. But because of the intensity of the bulbs, time limits for stand-up beds are generally lower than laydown versions. This makes it a great choice for those who are uncomfortable staying in a tanning bed for too long. The lamps used on the inside of standup beds are made with specialized reflectors that help spread the light completely around the chamber. This of course also helps to tan more evenly, preventing those tell-tale tanning bed creases and missed areas, like on the shoulder blades, under the arms, on the lower back, and under the buttocks.

Many people also like standup beds because they feel better about not having to touch the glass for hygiene purposes (even though there is never a need for concern since tanning salon staff keeps beds perfectly sanitized at all times!). The downsides to standup beds mostly have to do with comfort. Some people find it tiresome to stand the whole time, and prefer to lay down and relax. Also, standup beds require the use of eye goggles with nose adhesive so they stay on your face while you tan. It can sometimes be obnoxious keeping them in place when you are standing up.
