How to Correct a Bad Spray Tan

We get spray tans for a reason, whether for an important event, fun weekend ahead, or a vacation on the horizon. So, when spray tan results turn out bad, it is natural to panic. No one wants to feel like they are stuck with an uneven or streaky orange glow for weeks, nor do they want to feel like their hard-earned money was wasted. Fortunately, it is usually possible to correct about spray tan. There are different approaches you can take depending on your budget and personal comfort.

Sunless Tan Corrector Products

Certain products are recommended to fix a bad spray tan, such as enzyme peels and sunless tanning color refiners. These products are best for really bad spray tan results, like streakiness, unevenness, splotchiness, and orange tones. They are highly rated and typically effective, but they tend to come with a higher price tag.

For instance, a highly recommended product for spray tan and sunless tanner correction is AmorePacific’s Treatment Enzyme Peel, priced at $68 for 1.94 ounces of superfine powder and available at Sephora. You can find dupes to this luxury brand enzyme peel for as low as eight dollars, such as The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Exfoliating Peeling Solution, also available at Sephora.

To save money, you can forgo the store-bought products and make your own spray tan corrector solution at home. Just combine lemon juice and sugar to create an all-natural, super-powerful exfoliating body scrub. Allow the scrub to sit on your skin for several minutes, then gently exfoliate using a loofah or mitt.

To use spray tan corrector products like chemical exfoliators or lemon sugar scrubs, begin by steaming in the shower for ten minutes, then using the product, exfoliate all over. When you’re finished, dry off completely and fully moisturize.

Spray Tan Lighteners

If your spray tan came out too dark, it is possible to lighten it up a bit. Just be sure to give your tan a couple of days to fully settle before deciding that it is too orange, dark, or harsh. If it is, try slathering your skin with baby oil or coconut oil. Then soak in a hot bath for 20 to 30 minutes. The oil works to break down the tanning layers, while the hot water effectively lifts it away. You can also gently exfoliate with a loofa.

Drip Marks

Whether you got stuck in the rain or had a supercharged sweat session after your spray tan session, getting rid of drip marks can be done. Simply rub some lotion or mousse-like moisturizer in a circular motion over the drip mark. Because you still have bronzer on your skin, it is possible to blend out the drip mark with a moisturizing product. The key here is timing. You must treat spray tan drip marks as soon as possible; before your spray tan settles completely.

How to Remove a Spray Tan

Are you convinced that your spray tan is too botched to be toned down or balanced out? In this case, you might want to remove it entirely. Just be sure you have the right materials so that you can protect and nourish your skin during and after the process. To remove a spray tan, start by saturating your entire tan with a high-quality body oil like jojoba. You can also use baby oil or coconut oil. Allow the oil to soak into your skin for a while, preferably 10 to 15 minutes. Then, using a loofah or mitt, exfoliate your skin using a high quality body scrub. Work the product into your skin using circular motions to ensure full exfoliation.

How Does Skin Produce Vitamin D?

Now that summer is over and winter is here, we might all be experiencing some Vitamin D deficiency. This can be a bit concerning since Vitamin D is an important factor in preventative human health. Combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, Vitamin D can provide health benefits in a natural way to decrease susceptibility to certain health threats like cancer, heart disease, and more. Also called the “sunshine vitamin”, UV-B from sunlight is the most effective and naturally-occurring source for Vitamin D. For these reasons, we can be grateful that our bodies produce it naturally.

Continue reading to learn the basic process of Vitamin D production in the skin, as well as, alternative sources for Vitamin D.

Indianapolis Tanning Salon 317-257-8262

Vitamin D Production in Skin

Once your skin is exposed to sunlight, which contains ultra violet-B rays, it takes what it needs and de-metabolizes the rest. Too much Vitamin D can cause the body to over-process calcium, another vital mineral for human health. This is why sunless tanning should be done safely and responsibly.

Sunlight-produced Vitamin D protects against this potential danger, since the skin naturally defends itself by de-metabolizing any excess UVB.  Generally, 10-20 minutes in the sun each day is all you need! This of course depends on the strength of the sunrays and the darkness of your skin. Darker skin and weaker sunrays may require longer sun exposure for optimal production levels.

Vitamin D Alternatives

The sun is the best and most guaranteed natural source for Vitamin D production and sufficiency. However, for those that cannot be exposed to the sun for health concerns, there are alternative sources that can provide the same benefits. Many health stores offer Vitamin D supplements that come in the form of pills, capsules, powders, drinks, gummies, and more. Although not natural, these alternatives are easily accessible and affordable. Talk to your doctor before mixing any OTC dietary supplements with current medications or health conditions.

One of the most basic questions tanning salon staffs get from new clients has to do with using a tanning bed. There are various kinds of tanning beds out there, from laydown and standup, to mega, ultra bronzing, high pressure, red light, and more; so as a first-time tanning bed user, these options can feel quite overwhelming. For this reason, tanning salons generally recommend using a laydown, or standard, bed for your first indoor tanning experience.

Getting Started

Your first step begins before you even leave the house! Think about what you are going to wear to the tanning salon, as well as, what you are going to wear in the tanning bed. See our last blog, “What Should I Wear in a Tanning Bed?” for information and tips on tanning bed attire.

Tanning Lotions

Once you know what your attire will be, your next step is to choose a tanning product. Or, you can choose to forgo tanning lotions altogether. Just be sure to still incorporate some form of SPF protection or sunscreen, as you can still burn in a tanning bed just like you would in the natural sun. See our blog, “3 Types of Indoor Tanning Lotions” to learn more about tanning lotion options.

Arriving at the Salon

Upon arriving at the salon, you will check in and pay at the counter. Tell them you would like to do a standard bed, and then discuss how long you would like to tan. You will tan similar in a bed as you would in the sun, so keep this in mind when choosing a time limit. For first timers, it is recommended to go for 10 minutes, and then see how you feel. If you tan well, you can opt for 15 to 20 minutes. When your check-in is complete, you will be instructed to a room. Before heading to your room, be sure to grab a pair of gold eye protection stickers on the counter. These are free, and they work very well.

Note: If you need to use the restroom, do so before heading to your room. There are guest bathrooms in the back of the salon.

Inside Your Room

Once you get inside your room, close the door and be sure it is locked. You can choose to turn on the radio next to the head of the bed, before getting started. Now with your tunes set, remove your clothing to reveal the attire you have chosen to tan in, and then apply your tanning lotion (or sunscreen), if you choose to. Next, head to the wall and press the button that starts your tanning bed. Then sit on the bed and apply your eye protection stickers, following the instructions on the back of the wrapper.

Tanning

Now just lay down, close the top of the tanning bed on top of your, and RELAX! You can adjust the speed of the fans and monitor the time left from inside the bed as you tan. Keep in mind, if you are in a bed with a face tanner, once you turn it off, it will not come back on. When the bed shuts off, get out, wipe yourself down with the towel provided, and toss your eye stickers in the trashcan. After getting dressed, you are welcome to use the complimentary deodorants, hairsprays, and face wipes provided in the back of the tanning salon. These amenities are great for those who have to go back to work or run additional errands for the day!

What Should I Wear in a Tanning Bed?

First time tanning salon clients are quick to wonder what the appropriate attire is for using a tanning bed. Should I tan in my underwear? Is nude tanning a faux pas? Will a tanning bed damage my swimsuit? If you have these same questions and concerns as a beginner tanner, continue reading to learn what tanning bed attire is recommended for everyone, regardless of tanning level or experience.

Appropriate Tanning Bed Attire

There are many options to choose from when deciding on what to wear in the tanning bed. The garb you choose will depend on your own personal preferences and complexion goals. When making the decision, it helps to think about the type of tan lines you are bound to develop. If you are someone who likes to wear a lot of crop tops, you might want to go with a bikini. If you wear a lot of tube tops, you might want to avoid ties and strings around your neck. If you have clothes that reveal your back, you may want to skip a top all together! The same principle of tan lines apply to the legs and feet too.

Another factor that will, and should, influence your choice is your skin type and how well you tan, or burn. If you have areas of the body that are very sensitive and burn easily, you might want to keep them covered up while tanning. Keep in mind that all of this applies to spray tanning as well. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Birthday Suit – If you want to be free of tan lines completely, tan naked. Don’t worry; these days, tanning salons are inspected rigorously for health and safety violations, so most use top-quality hygienic practices and products that keep tanning beds sanitary at all times. Just beware that sensitive skin and exposed tissues are more susceptible to burning and other dermal irritation when tanning in the buff.

Swimsuit – The majority of tanning clients wear a swimsuit, whether a full piece, bikini, or trunks. If you are a first-time tanning bed user, you may feel the most comfortable starting off in a bathing suit. And don’t worry about ruining your swimwear. The tanning bed will not damage your swimsuit in any way. It’s just like tanning in the natural sun!

Underwear – Another popular and convenient choice of attire for a tanning bed is underwear. Many people stop by the tanning salon after or before work, or while out running errands, so they do not always have a swimsuit on them. Simply tanning in some briefs, boxers, bras, and panties will work as an excellent substitute to swimwear.

Special Tip: It helps to wear loose-fitting clothing to the tanning salon for comfort, convenience, and efficiency. Consider sweat pants, joggers, leisure shorts, baggy tees, loose tanks, and loose outerwear. Not only can you change out of and back into your outfit in a matter of seconds, you will not have to worry about chaffing or sweating once you leave the salon.

4 Indoor Tanning Tips You Can’t Ignore

Whether you have tanned all your life, or considering a first-time trip to the tanning salon, there are some tips that can never be mentioned too many times. ❶ Prepare Your Skin

Your routine of indoor tanning starts long before you get to the salon. Before you go in for a tan, whether in the bed or a spray session, it is important to prepare your skin. First, be sure your skin is clean and dry. Then, use a quality, light-weight moisturizer on your entire body. From head to toe, be sure your skin is nourished and relaxed. Furthermore, do not go in for a wax or pluck the same day as your tan.

❷ Wear Eye Protection

As you enter your tanning room, be sure you are equipped with your tanning bed eye goggles or stickers. Eye protection is one of the most important parts of indoor tanning. Your eyes are your best defense against the entire world, so you must protect them at all costs. See our blog, “The Importance of Tanning Bed Eye Protection” to learn why. Choose anything, even a towel, if you forget your eye protection at your next trip to the tanning bed salon.

❸ Choose the Right Level

Another important tip, or habit, you should always incorporate into your indoor tanning routine is modesty. Do not choose a level that is too strong for your skin tone, nor a product that will not react well with your skin type. Furthermore, be sure to tan in moderation; you do not want to look overdone, nor put that much stress on your skin. Talk to your tanning bed consultant for advice on the best level and lotion for your tanning goals.

❹ Moisturize Your Skin

Many people make the mistake of assuming that their job is done once they get out of the tanning salon, but a very important step still remains: moisturizing. If you fail to moisturize your skin sufficiently, your tan will not last, nor will it look its best. Be sure to moisturize your body as soon as you get out of the shower; and continue to moisturize every day until your next tanning session. Also, moisturized tans look more natural and peel less.

The Importance of Tanning Bed Eye Protection

When it comes to protecting your eyes in a tanning bed, closing your lids doesn’t even come close to getting the job done. Simply closing your eyes in a tanning bed will not be enough to protect them from the potential optic damages caused by UV light exposure. Although you might be trying to avoid uneven tan coverage, or the “raccoon-eye” look, wearing any form of eye protection is vital to the overall health and function of your optical sensors, visual cortex, and sight.

Continue reading to learn why you must wear eye protection in the tanning bed.

Eye Protection From UV Light and Heat

Almost all tanning salons sell little strapless eye goggles that are so tiny and thin, they will not leave behind traces of tanning lines. Some salons may provide them for free upon request, but if not, they are very cheap to purchase. If you are a regular tanner, then goggles may produce the ‘white lid look’, in which case, you can opt for eye stickers instead.

Many tanning salons sell these as little as $1 for a set, and they fold up into cones and rest perfectly on top of your eyelids. These reduce the look of tan lines and still adequately protect your eyes from UV damage. A popular brand is called Wink-ease®.

Why is it so vital to cover your eyes while tanning?

? Your eyes can get sunburnt just like skin can! Burnt eyes will cause short-term eye damage for days at a time, such as itchiness, redness, and excessive watering.

? It only takes one tanning session with eye wear to damage your eyes. If you think you don’t tan often enough to need eye protection, you’re wrong!

? Your eyelids only block out 25 % of the damaging UV light exposure in a tanning bed. And this is not enough to protect them.

? There are two common types of eye sunburns: 1) Photokeratitis, and 2) Basal Cell Carcinoma. The first is a temporary but painful corneal burn that causes tearing and blurring for days at a time. The second damages delicate eye tissue, causing swelling and redness in and around the eyes.

? Non-disposable eye protection should be cleaned and sanitized after every use, or you are at risk of contracting and/or spreading contagious eye infections. For this reason, sharing eye wear is not recommended.

? Repeated UV light exposure without eye protection can cause long-term, and even irreversible, damages to eyes. Examples include diminished color reception, reduced night vision,

? Repeated exposure also makes you more prone to developing a cataract. This can cause extreme pain and even blindness. The only treatment for cataracts is invasive surgery, and there’s always a risk with that too.

? One of the most important ways to protect yourself when using a tanning bed is to wear eye protection. Talk to your tanning salon about options for eye protection, and advice for safe tanning.

Indoor Tanning Association (ITA)

The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) was established in the late 20th century in order to protect the rights of anyone who wishes to get a tan, whether through artificial light or natural sun. To this day, the ITA works as an ambassador for thousands of business owners, manufacturers, and suppliers of indoor tanning products and services around the nation. They also represent several special interest groups and organizations involved with the practice of indoor tanning.

Legislative Developments

Another beneficial initiative taken on by the Indoor Tanning Association is their steadfast supervision and comprehension of all the most recent changes and happenings within state and federal legislation. This constant observation of legislative developments protects us tanners from unfair restrictions, regulations, and other shifts that impact our existing indoor tanning freedoms. On the other hand, the ITA also works alongside both state and federal establishments to set regulations and limitations that protect tanners from harm. For example, the ITA helps maintain age restriction and parental consent laws for indoor tanning.

Tanning Research and Innovations

Another wonderful quality of the Indoor Tanning Association is their commitment to encouraging the generation of new and precise research in order to promote and spread safe and responsible tanning practices. Not only do they work alongside several interest groups and organizations to accomplish this, they also help to regulate manufacturing standards and maintenance for tanning equipment, as well as, provide educational resources for both clients and suppliers.

Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor Tanning

If you are preparing to leave for spring break vacation, it is wise to get work on a base tan before heading out to the beach. Even with sunscreen protection, the sun’s UV-rays can still cause burning in tropic and sub-tropic regions. A base tan can give your skin the added protection it needs to tan safely in the outdoor sun. Although indoor UV-rays and outdoor UV-rays are similar and render similar results in terms of tanning, there are some notable differences. Understanding these differences can help you better protect your skin from sun damage, both indoors and out.

Indoor Tanning

Indoor tanning is a common method for achieving an instant, sun-kissed glow. There are two primary types of indoor tanning options: tanning beds and spray tanning. Tanning beds come in all sorts of strengths, makes, and models. There are regular, standard beds, stronger “mega” beds, stand-up beds, and even face tanners. Tanning beds tan the skin through the use of specially-designed lamps and bulbs that contain specialized materials, such as inert gasses, mercury, and phosphorus coatings, which turn electricity into ultra-violet rays. The bulbs emit these ultra-violet rays, which mimic the sun’s natural rays, and in turn, allows your skin to tan at a more rapid rate. They give safe, but instance bronzing results that last up to a week.

Spray tanning also comes with its own set of options, from automatic spray tan machines, to manual airbrush spray tanning and more. In contrast to using UVA light, spray tanning uses a pigmented solution to change the color of the epidermis. Although exposure to ultraviolet light in controlled quantities is safe for your body, and even helps to produce vitamin D, which is an essential element our bodies need for bone strength and more, those looking for a UV-Free experience will likely prefer spray tanning as an alternative to traditional tanning beds.

Outdoor Tanning

The natural sun gives off two primary types of ultra violet rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin’s thickest layer, known as the dermis. This is the type of UV light that effects premature aging, such as wrinkles (photoaging), dry skin, dark spots, and even suppression of the immune system. UVB rays effect the superficial layers of our skin, which are the layers that tan and burn. These rays also play a central role in eye damage (including cataracts) and the development of various skin cancers.

FAQS About Tingle Tanning Lotions

When you want to change up your same-old tanning routine, the perfect place to start is adding or upgrading tanning products. From moisturizers and lotions, to bronzers, tinglers, and more, the options are endless. But before you dive into a decision on a new tanning product, be sure to do your research and determine which is best for your skin type and overall complexion goals. One of the most misunderstood and misused tanning products are tingle tanning lotions. These lotions are meant for advanced or experienced tanners, and not recommended for those with sensitive skin or preexisting skin conditions.

If you have heard of these products before, and interested in learning more about them, continue below for a list of the most frequently asked questions and answers about tingle tanning lotions.

Indianapolis Tanning Salon 317-257-8262
Indianapolis Tanning Salon 317-257-8262

What are Tingle Tanning Lotions?

Tingle tanning lotions are called many names, both on the market and among social groups. You may hear them be called “tinglers” or “tingle lotions”, as well as, “hot action” or even “microcirculation” lotions. They are popular because they render a streak-free, natural sun-kissed look, and in a shorter amount of time. Basically, tinglers are the most intense and reactive tanning products you can buy on the market. They are designed to promote faster tanning action, while producing a natural, streak-free sun-tanned complexion.

How Do Tingle Tanning Lotions Work?

Tingle tanning lotions increase the circulation of blood and oxygen to the upper layer of skin (known as the epidermis), which promotes melanin production (a process called melanogenesis). See our blog, “How Does Our Skin Tan?” to learn all about melanocytes and melanogenesis. Melanin is what gives skin color, and producing more of it makes skin darker. In a tanning bed, the production of melanin is boosted further by UV light exposure, thus rendering a deeper tan. Tingle lotions also produce stimulus in the skin, or tingling sensation, hence their name.

What are the Ingredients in Tingle Tanning Lotions?

The most common ingredients in tingle lotions are methyl nicotinate, benzyl nicotinate, and a variety of moisturizing ingredients. Methyl nicotinate and benzyl nicotinate increase micro-circulation to the skin, while moisturizers, such as black currant, white tea extract, and essential oils, help keep your tan longer. See our article, “What’s Inside Your Tingle Tanning Lotion?” to learn more details about their common ingredients.

Are Tingle Tanning Lotions Safe?

Tingle tanning lotions are entirely safe when used according to manufacturer instructions. They are also approved by the FDA. However, some people have described the tingling sensation as painful or highly uncomfortable. For this reason, tingle tanning lotions are not recommended for those with sensitive skin or skin conditions. They are recommended for advanced tanners with experience using tanning products.

Sunblock is Not Just For Summer

Many people assume that summer is the only season that requires outdoor protection from UV-rays, however, sun protection should be a year-round effort. Most people associate sunburns with hot summer weather, but the truth is that your skin can also burn in cold, overcast weather. You see, the sun emits two types of rays: UVB and UVA rays. Both of these UV-rays pass through clouds, mist, and fog, delivering an unnoticeable level of UV exposure.

This is a concern for those without any sun protection on their skin since the potential to burn from overexposure is much higher. As a result, some of the worst sunburns happen when least expected. Furthermore, UVA rays are not just from direct sun; they can also come from natural light through glass, windows, clouds, mist, and fog. This is why it is strongly recommended to incorporate sun protection into your daily skin care regime.

The ultra violet radiation emitted by the sun is what changes the color of your skin, either into a tan or a burn. UVB rays are the immediate cause of skin color changes, while UVA rays are the ones that penetrate deep into the skin. But UVA rays are not just from direct sun, they are also a product of natural light through glass, windows, clouds, mist, and fog. They are also the same rays used in tanning beds.

How to Apply Sunblock on Cloudy Days

Depending on the type of cloud, only a certain level of UVA rays emit through and penetrate the skin. Dark grey clouds allow less UVA exposure than white, fluffy ones. Either way, sunscreen is a must. On days with dark clouds, a milder sunscreen will do, but on days with fluffy white clouds, choose a stronger sunblock. And don’t forget that elevation has an effect on sun exposure too!

Regardless of which type of clouds the day has in store, if you are going to be higher up in elevation, say on a mountain or hills, then you will need a stronger sunblock and more coverage. The higher you are, the close you are to the sun’s UVA rays, which is why it makes sense that you are more vulnerable to a sunburn at higher elevations. The same goes for participating in outdoor winter activities. You can still burn in these conditions, so sufficient coverage is a must.
