The Most Common Spray Tanning Problem and How to Solve It

Spray tanning is a luxurious amenity that serves a wide range of purposes for men and women alike. Not only does a quality spray tan enhance your complexion and boost sun protection, but it also increases your self-esteem and refines your poise, which renders additional value in endless applications! From job interviews and conference calls to work meetings, sales pitches, and even first dates, a great spray tan can give you the confidence you need to wow your audience.

But there is another side to spray tanning that is not so spectacular. Many tanning enthusiasts, especially beginners, tend to run into a few problems with spray tans. One of the most common spray tanning problems is patchy, uneven skin tone. Spray tans are meant to look natural, so when they turn out splotchy and imbalanced, the entire point is defeated, money is wasted, and the person is utterly bummed.

Continue reading to learn how you can fix this common spray tanning problem, as well as how to prevent it from happening again after your next session.

How to Fix a Runny or Streaky Spray Tan

The best way to correct a streaky or uneven spray tan blunder is to seek out professional tanning assistance. Contact a local and trusted Indianapolis tanning salon that can give you customized recommendations according to the type of color you were given, your natural complexion, and your skin type.

You will likely need another spray tanning session using a water-based solution, which your tanning consultant will recommended after you have fully and evenly exfoliated, head to toe. They will also suggest using some skin care products to better moisturize your skin before and after your spray tanning session.

Patchiness With a Fading Spray Tan

In some cases, parts of spray tan can become patchy and uneven as the color fades. This is usually a result of using alcohol in the spray tanning solution. Alcohol can dry out the skin, which can cause peeling, cracking, and color fading. This is why it is recommended to use water-based spray tanning solutions. Applying a new spray tan on top of an old one without properly exfoliating first can also cause a spray tan to fade prematurely and produce a patchy complexion.

How to Prepare for a Spray Tan

Skin care preparation is the most critical step to achieving the best possible spray tan outcome. You must fully cleanse and exfoliate the skin 24 hours in advance.

If you need to remove hair, whether by razor or wax, be sure to do so a full 48 hours before your spray tan. This allows any residual inflammation to heal.

On the day of your appointment, prepare your skin by applying a quality barrier cream, similar to a standard body lotion but with certain essential oils and without ingredients that are incompatible with spray tan solutions. In addition to a specialty skin barrier cream, you will also need a pH balancing spray.

After your spray tan, do not go to bed until your skin does not feel sticky or tacky at all. Going to sleep before your spray tan has fully dried can cause patchiness. For the first 12 hours, avoid showering, bathing, swimming, heavy exercise, rain, and any other form of water or moisture.

9 Things That Can Fix an Orange Tan

Did a poor quality self-tanner turn your skin orange? Or perhaps you went a little heavy-handed with your application? Either way, there is no need to worry. You can fix an orange tan caused by self-tanning lotion, or at least reduce its oomph, with just a little effort and some key materials found around the house.

Continue reading to learn 9 everyday items you can use to help your skin return to its original complexion after turning orange from self-tanner.

Items That Can Fix an Orange Tan

Look around your house for some everyday items like washcloths and loofahs. Also look around for essential kitchen ingredients like lemon, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Do you have any hydrogen peroxide? What about a pumice stone? If you have one, grab that too! Last, but certainly not least, make a stop at your liquor cabinet or bar cart for some vodka; doesn’t have to be a fancy brand!

With these materials, or at least some, you are well-equipped to combat that orange tan all on your own. If you do not have any loofahs or pumice stone, you can purchase them at any local convenient or department store. As a matter of fact, you can have any of these 9 items delivered to your house in under an hour with apps like Doordash, Drizzly, and UberEats!

Loofah, Washcloth, and Pumice Stone

If you have a loofah, washcloth, or pumice stone, you have your base for the orange tan removal process. The gentle abrasive action of a loofah works well to remove too much self-tanner on hands, feet, knuckles, elbows, and knees. A pumice stone is best for reducing the orange hues on the palms of your hand. Finish your hot shower with a full body cleansing with a soft washcloth to remove any excess self-tanning lotion residues.

Sugar and Salt

It does not matter which spice cabinet staple you choose; both salt and sugar work well to help eliminate top layer of skin cells, which can reduce the strength of your orange tan hue. Salt and sugar scrubs work really well for self-tanner stains on hands and feet.

Lemon

Lemon contains citric acid, which can help lighten up the orange hue of a self-tan gone wrong. The acidity of the lemon can lighten up dark orange stains on knuckles and the palms of hands too. Simply slice up a lemon and rub the fruit center on your tanning stains. Avoid treating areas with open cuts. Ouch!

Vodka

If your self-tan is undoubtedly a catastrophe, you may want to make yourself a cocktail before using the vodka on your skin! To remove or lighten an orange tan with vodka, simply dab the alcohol on your skin with a cotton pad. This method is best for treating small areas, like the face, hands, feet, or belly button.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has so many wonderful applications and lightening up an orange tan is one of them! To reduce the harshness of the orange in your tan, use a washcloth to gently wipe your skin. Then rinse with warm water. Baking soda has a bleaching affect, plus its abrasiveness works as an effective exfoliant.

Hydrogen Peroxide

hydrogen peroxide is another common household ingredient can help you lighten up and orange tan. It is especially great for removing dark self-tanner stains between fingernails and toenails, as well as on knuckles in the palms of hands. Apply with a cotton ball or cotton pad, and then rinse cleaned with warm water for best results.

Has your recent self-tanning experience taken a turn for the worst and now you need some professional help repairing your complexion? Contact Broad Ripple Tans at 317-257-8262 to learn all about our luxury spray tanning services in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Can I Use a Tanning Bed if I Have Photosensitive Skin?

Photosensitivity and indoor tanning are not compatible. Continue reading to learn more about the dangers of tanning with photosensitive skin, as well as some safer alternatives to sunless tanning if you suffer from photosensitivity yourself.

Photosensitivity is a Sunlight Skin Condition

Photosensitivity is a condition that renders the skin extra-sensitive to UV and UVB ray exposure. You can get this exposure from the natural sun, or from an indoor tanning bed. Those who live with photosensitivity experience faster and more exaggerated reactions to sunlight and UV rays, including redness, swelling, epidermal irritation, and of course, sunburn. Sunburns can develop severely if a photosensitive person is exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time without proper sun protection measures like lotion, hats, and clothing coverage.

Tanning Indoors With Photosensitive Skin

Although photosensitivity is a condition that renders you extra-susceptible to UV light reactions and burns, you may be able to use a tanning bed if your doctor says it is okay. If you have photosensitive skin, always consult with your physician or medical practitioner before using an indoor tanning bed or tanning in the natural sun.

In most cases of photosensitivity, skin will not tan properly, so it is not recommended to go tanning at all, under any circumstances. Instead, they should avoid prolonged sun exposure as best they can, and when forced to be in the sun, always wear sunscreen and cover their bodies with the lightweight, breathable clothing to ensure their skin does not react severely to the UV light exposure.

Detecting Photosensitivity

Not sure if you have photosensitive skin? You do not have to be born with photosensitivity to have photosensitive skin. There are certain medications, products, and even lifestyle choices that can render you more susceptible to UV light reactions. Talk to your doctor to see if there are some tests you can take to determine the level of photosensitivity you experience when exposed to UV light before using a tanning bed or tanning in the natural sun.

Tanning Alternatives For Photosensitive Skin

Fortunately, there are several wonderful and effective alternatives to getting a glowing complexion without exposing your sensitive skin to UV light, whether in a tanning bed or out in the natural sun. Consider options such as automatic spray tanning beds and sunless tanners to achieve the custom color and depth you desire.

Not sure where to get the best spray tanning service and sunless tanning products in Indianapolis? Contact Broad Ripple Tans at 317-257-8262 to learn all about our luxury automated spray tanning bed in Indianapolis, Indiana. We also offer sunless tanning products and spray tan coupons!

What to Do if Your Summer Tan Has Begun to Fade

Just like summer, sun tans due not last forever. At some point in time, your summer tan will begin to fade away, and your skin will return to its natural skin tone. But not to worry! When your suntan starts to go away, just turn to these effective skincare tips to maintain a lustrous and glowing complexion all year long!

Help Your Summer Tan Transition into Fall

Fall season is here, which means we can be excited about the chilly edge to the air and the snazzy autumn wardrobes we get to finally pull out of our closets! To go along with your fall season attitude and attire, you will want great looking skin. As your summer tan begins to fade, take the necessary steps to help your skin transition in tone and complexion.

But if you are looking for top-secret tanning tips for beautiful long-lasting color, you won’t have to look very far. That’s because the trick to maintaining a glowing complexion is simply remaining dedicated to good skin care!

Great skincare should include safe and gentle skincare products, routine cleansing and exfoliation, daily moisturizing, and sun protection. It is also important to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to ensure your organs, including your largest (skin!), are well-hydrated.

When it comes to a fading summer tan, it is important to fine tune your skincare routine with a few extra steps. As soon as you notice your tan fading away, begin to exfoliate, upgrade your moisturizing habits, and seek sunless tanning options.

These three steps can help ensure that your summer-to-fall-to-winter complexion transition looks great all year long:

Begin to Exfoliate

Exfoliation is critical to good skincare, especially when you have a fading tan. Gently exfoliating your skin effectively eliminates dead skin cells from the outer epidermis, including old, dehydrated pigmentation from your summer tan. This process also removes skincare product and lotion residues built up in your pores. It is best to exfoliate once a week to keep your tan bright and seamless, and to get the best results from your tanning lotion. Be sure to use a gentle exfoliation tool and consider pairing it with a quality exfoliation cream.

Moisturize Your Skin More Often

Daily moisturizing is one of the most important things you can do for your skin, regardless of age or gender. From the moment we are born, are skin thirsts for proper hydration. When your summer tan begins to fade, moisturizing routines need to be taken up a notch. Rather than moisturizing one time a day, perhaps after your daily shower, it is recommended to double up on the frequency of your moisturizing schedule.

Moisturize first thing in the morning and before you go to bed to help quench dehydrated skin cells and prolong the life of your summer tan. Proper moisturizing will also contribute to a flawless transition of your complexion from summer to fall.

Seek Indoor Tanning Options

Once you have committed to an improved skincare routine that includes regular exfoliation and daily moisturizing, you can start to enhance the complexion and tone of your skin with some indoor tanning options. Look to your local Indianapolis broad Ripple tanning salon for luxury tanning beds and spray tanning services for the most natural looking tan.

To achieve the best spray tan results, you must stay fully committed to a great skincare routine. If you are not interested in spray tanning, you can try self-tanners or tanning pills, but these are not typically recommended for the best complexion effects.

Is it Possible to Wear Too Much Sunscreen?

Many of us have been under the impression that using sunscreen is the definitive way of protecting yourself from the daily UV rays of the sun. In fact, many of us believe that using it every day, for every occasion, is the most effective method. But could be possible that wearing sunscreen from head to toe every single day is not as good for you as you thought? Just like everything else in life, too much of a good thing can sometimes be a bad thing. Although sunscreen is a vital part of routine skin protection and care, it is important to know just how much is too much.

Protection Against Excessive Sun Exposure

Sunscreen lotion is meant to protect our skin from excessive sun exposure. It is important to remember that the sun’s UV rays, although quite harmful in large amounts, are highly beneficial in small doses. That is because they stimulate the natural production of an essential fat-soluble vitamin in our skin called Vitamin D. This includes Vitamin D-1, D-2, and D-3.

Furthermore, our bodies need to be able to process small levels of Vitamin D3, which is something the sun’s rays deliver. Vitamin D facilitates normal immune system function, as well as regulates the absorption of calcium and phosphorous. It can also prevent certain health implications, such as osteoporosis, fungal growth, and tooth decay.

Lack of Vitamin D

Without sufficient Vitamin D production in our bodies, we could be at higher risk of certain bone abnormalities, such as osteomalacia (soft bones) or osteoporosis (fragile, brittle bones). For this reason, it is not necessary to shun all sun exposure. Sunscreen is recommended for lengthy outdoor activity or sun exposure, and not necessarily for your everyday trip to the salon or grocer.

Rather than covering yourself from head to toe in sun screen every day, simply use a normal amount on your exposed skin, such as your arms, face, and neck, and cover the rest of your body with sun reflective clothing. You can wear a hat and sunglasses, or a scarf as well.

Sunscreens are useful, but excessive usage can sometimes be bad for your health. Most contain several chemicals, and repeated usage over a long period of time is bound to have negative implications a person’s health.

The Importance of Prepping Your Skin Before Spray Tanning

When it comes to getting spray tan, your priority is getting the best results possible. In order to do that, it is vital that you prep your skin prior to your spray tanning session. Continue reading to learn the importance of prepping your skin before spray tanning, and exactly which products you need to get the job done properly.

Why Prepping the Skin Prior to a Spray Tan is So Important

If you fail to properly prepare your skin prior to spray tanning, there are several possible consequences that can arise after your session. Some of the most common results of not prepping the skin before spray tanning include color blotchiness, uneven fading, uneven color development, faster fading, and unnatural appearance (fake tan look). None of these spray tanning outcomes or something you want to experience. So, in order to avoid all of these spray tanning blunders, be sure to prep your skin before your session. Here’s How:

Hydrate and Moisturize
The preparation needed to achieve the best spray tanning results must start days before your actual appointment. It is important to fully-hydrate and moisturize your skin, head to toe, and even more so in drier areas like elbows and heels.

Wax and Shave
If you need to remove hair, whether by razor or wax, be sure to do so a full 48 hours before your spray tan. This allows any residual inflammation to heal.

Exfoliate
Just hair removal, exfoliating the skin has many benefits, but can temporarily upset the skin. Allow yourself 24 to 48 hours before spray tanning to ensure your results are even and long-lasting. This will give your skin enough time to return to its normal pH balance.

Spray Tanning Preparation Tips

In addition to these steps in the days before your session, you will need to take certain precautions just before the appointment. In order to prepare your skin for spray tanning day, you will need a quality skin barrier cream, similar to a standard body lotion or body balm, but with certain essential oils, and without certain ingredients that are incompatible with conventional spray tan solutions. In addition to a specialty skin barrier cream, you will also need a pH balancing spray. You can purchase both of these products at any local drugstore or beauty store. You can also purchase them online or possibly at your local Indianapolis spray tanning salon.

Barrier Creams

A barrier cream will serve just as that, a barrier between your skin and the ingredients in your spray tanning solution. Basically, it reduces the absorption of DHA in areas that are dry or that you don’t want a lot of color. This will effectively avoid blotchiness, uneven coloration, and unwanted darkening. Just before your spray tanning appointment, apply the barrier cream to areas where you don’t want to spray tea and to absorb too deeply, and therefore cause a darker tone than the rest of your body. Such areas include elbows, knees, ankles, and possibly even fingers, palms, and toes.

pH Balancing Spray

A pH balancing spray is designed to protect your spray tan results from any residual solution buildup on the skin. Basically, it ensures that the skin is free of any body lotion, perfume, sweat, dirt, oil, or any other type of external contaminants. As a result, a spray tan evolves more evenly, and renders excellent results. A pH balancing spray is perfectly safe for the body and the face as well. It is also suggested that such sprays are cold, and therefore shock the pores, which allows the spray tanning solution to adhere more evenly on the skin.

It All Begins With Thorough Exfoliation

Before your spray tanning session arrives, your priority should be to exfoliate. It is important to have fresh skin for the spray tanning agent to adhere to. Exfoliated skin holds on to spray tanning color much longer than skin that has not been exfoliated. Don’t be too harsh though; exfoliate gently but thoroughly over your entire body, or where you wish to be sprayed. Begin your exfoliation process a day or two before your spray tanning appointment for best results. A simple loofah and mild body wash will do, however you can also purchase different exfoliation tools, such as gloves and sponges.

After Your Spray Tanning Session

After your spray tan, please wait at least 6 to 12 hours to take a shower, bathe, or swim. You might think you look too dark, but that is just the tanning agent. You need to give the tanner time to develop, which usually takes up to half a day on average. Once you do shower or bathe, avoid exfoliating. Instead of the loofah, if that’s your go to tool, use a soft sponge or washcloth to cleanse your skin.

But the real keys to achieving the ultimate spray tanning results are to prepare your skin before your session, and then treat your skin after your session. After your spray tanning appointment, it is vital that you thoroughly moisturize your whole body, head to toe, every morning and evening; yes, twice a day, especially after bathing or swimming, as water dries out your skin even more.

Be sure to use a quality body moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type. You might want to also consider choosing a lotion that contains vital nutrients and essential oils to promote anti-aging preventative maintenance and sun protection. If you really want a little added boost of color, look for moisturizer that contains DHA.

Does Your Spray Tan Look Orange?

Before tanning technology was what it is today, the dreaded orange effect was a common occurrence in the industry. For this reason, the risk of looking orange has always been a stigma with spray tanning. This stigma has created fear in many tanning enthusiasts, leading them away from trying it out for themselves. However, modern-day innovations in spray tanning technology reduces the risk of turning orange.

Advancements in products, tools, machinery, and technique has done well to prevent this old-time tanning error, and render beautiful, glowing tans in the right color families.Although innovative tools and products do well to prevent orange tans, technique plays a major role in how a spray tan turns out. That is why it is important to always choose a qualified salon to administer yours.

You Can Usually Blame a bad Spray Tan on User Error

User error is the most common reason why spray tans turn orange. No matter how advanced a technician’s tools and equipment may be, a spray tan can still turn out orange if they are not properly educated, trained, and experienced.

First, they must use the right solution. The right solution depends on several factors, like a person’s skin type, skin tone, desired skin tone, and more. Spraying a client with a solution that is too dark for their skin tone and type can easily result in an orange tan. They should also prepare a client’s skin with the proper products, such as pH balancing spray and barrier creams.

Furthermore, the solutions must be mixed at the exact proportions. Using too much of one color, and not enough of another, or vice versa, can also result in the orange effect. This can also result in other undesirable skin conditions, such as blotchiness, alligator skin, and uneven fading.

Another common spray tanning user error is to apply the incorrect number of coats. Inexperienced technicians might apply a second or third coat because they are afraid the color will not be dark enough, but this is a big mistake in the industry. One or two coats is the general rule of thumb, and only experienced technicians can assess how many coats is the right number for a particular client.

Also, proper application is important to avoid an orange skin tone. For instance, using too much product on knees, elbows, hands, feet, and dry skin patches is a common mistake made by rookie spray tanning consultants.

How to Guarantee Great Spray Tanning Results

To ensure a great tan that won’t turn your skin orange, be sure to choose a reputable tanning salon whose tanning consultants are highly trained and experienced. Be sure to ask them which products and brands they use and why, as well as, what their level of air brush experience they have.

Can I Tan With a Fresh Surface Piercing?

Surface piercings are all the rage these days. They are becoming more and more innovative, and therefore, popular. These are not your traditional body piercings, however; surface piercings do not go through the skin and out the other side. Instead, they only insert into the skin, and held in place by a bar under the skin. The most common style is dimple piercings, but there are several others making their way onto the trend train, such as eyebrows, cupids bows, foreheads, chins, and even the chest.

Surface piercings are different from conventional ear and body piercings in style, but also in care. One example is tanning. If you have a fresh surface piercing that is less than a few weeks old, and you are planning to hit up your local tanning salon for an instant glow, you better be properly prepared.

Continue reading to learn how to tan in a tanning bed while also protecting your new surface piercing and surrounding skin.

How to Tan With a New Surface Piercing

Because surface piercings are infamously known to be very fragile and sensitive, especially in the early days, it is important to take good care of them during the healing process. Tanning exposes you to high levels of UV-ray and UV-B light, which can be harmful to your surface piercings and surrounding skin if you are not careful. Here’s how to properly prepare your surface piercings for a run in the tanning bed, as well as the real sun:

Step ONE – Clean

Clean your surface piercing and the surrounding area prior to tanning. This is a vital step because it eliminates anything that could cause irritation, or worse, infection. In some cases, people have reported that their skin actually rejected the piercing and pushed it out as a result of post-tanning skin irritation. You can also use antiseptic liquids, like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean your piercings.

Step TWO – Prevent Sun Burn

Once your surface piercing is clean and ready to go, you will need to implement some major sun protection tactics. If your skin surrounding the piercing were to burn, not only does it give your body one more wound to heal, but it can also cause permanent scarring around the piercing. Although you do not want sunscreen to get inside the surface piercing, be sure to apply some to the skin around the pierced area to prevent sun burn while tanning.

Step THREE – Cover Up

You are still not ready to tan yet. Now that your surface piercing is clean and sun protected, you need to cover it with a bandage. This additional sun protection step is important to ensure your freshly pierced skin is not damaged or irritated in any way during the tanning process. This is recommended for sun tanning or tanning beds. If you want to take it a step further, you can also cover your piercing with a towel, rag, or gauze. Just be sure whatever you use is clean.
