Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor Tanning

If you are preparing to leave for spring break vacation, it is wise to get work on a base tan before heading out to the beach. Even with sunscreen protection, the sun’s UV-rays can still cause burning in tropic and sub-tropic regions. A base tan can give your skin the added protection it needs to tan safely in the outdoor sun. Although indoor UV-rays and outdoor UV-rays are similar and render similar results in terms of tanning, there are some notable differences. Understanding these differences can help you better protect your skin from sun damage, both indoors and out.

Indoor Tanning

Indoor tanning is a common method for achieving an instant, sun-kissed glow. There are two primary types of indoor tanning options: tanning beds and spray tanning. Tanning beds come in all sorts of strengths, makes, and models. There are regular, standard beds, stronger “mega” beds, stand-up beds, and even face tanners. Tanning beds tan the skin through the use of specially-designed lamps and bulbs that contain specialized materials, such as inert gasses, mercury, and phosphorus coatings, which turn electricity into ultra-violet rays. The bulbs emit these ultra-violet rays, which mimic the sun’s natural rays, and in turn, allows your skin to tan at a more rapid rate. They give safe, but instance bronzing results that last up to a week.

Spray tanning also comes with its own set of options, from automatic spray tan machines, to manual airbrush spray tanning and more. In contrast to using UVA light, spray tanning uses a pigmented solution to change the color of the epidermis. Although exposure to ultraviolet light in controlled quantities is safe for your body, and even helps to produce vitamin D, which is an essential element our bodies need for bone strength and more, those looking for a UV-Free experience will likely prefer spray tanning as an alternative to traditional tanning beds.

Outdoor Tanning

The natural sun gives off two primary types of ultra violet rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin’s thickest layer, known as the dermis. This is the type of UV light that effects premature aging, such as wrinkles (photoaging), dry skin, dark spots, and even suppression of the immune system. UVB rays effect the superficial layers of our skin, which are the layers that tan and burn. These rays also play a central role in eye damage (including cataracts) and the development of various skin cancers.
