There are so many myths swarming the spray tanning community. Several of which happen to be about taking a shower after a spray tan. Of course, these misconceptions are mainly due to the fact that most people are still hearing and believing stories about old, outdated, and unstable spray tanning methodologies that are no longer in use. Today, the spray tanning industry has perfected itself with innovative and scientific formulas and technologies that guarantee good results; that is, so long as you do your part as well. This includes properly showering after spray tanning.
Continue below to learn the real facts about spray tanning and showering afterwards, as well as the truth about the common misconceptions surrounding spray tan care.
Myths About Showering and Spray Tanning
The most common misconception about showers and spray tans is that you should not take a shower after getting a spray tan because it will remove the color. This is not entirely untrue, but it is not accurate either. The fact is, taking a shower directly after coming home from a spray tanning session will remove some color, causing slight fading and even possible streaking; however, it will not remove it completely.
You see, unlike tanning in a bed, which activates the melanocytes in the epidermis to produce melanin, spray tanning applies artificial bronzers and colorants to the skin, which require some time to penetrate and dry. If you were to wash these tanning solutions off right away, only a fraction of the color will stay.
How to Shower After a Spray Tan
Wait at least 3 to 4 hours before taking a shower. For best results, wait up to 8 hours. In the case that your spray tan application was light, experts suggest waiting up to 12 hours before showering.
Do not take a bath; showering is the best practice after spray tanning. And be sure the water is not too hot. It should be moderately warm.
Do not use soap or body wash when showering after a spray tan. Instead, just use warm water and gently massage the skin with your hands or a soft sponge. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the skin too much, and do not use a loofa or exfoliating brush.
Do not stay in the shower too long. Keep your shower time at around 10 or 15 minutes. After your shower, only use alcohol-free products on the skin to increase and protect the longevity of your tan.
It is important to take a shower after spray tanning in order to remove leftover tanning residues, dirt, sweat, dead skin, and sebum. Just be sure to wait at least a few hours to get the best possible results. Remember: the cleaner and clearer the skin, the better looking and longer-lasting your tan will be!
