Preparation is Essential for Obtaining the Best Spray Tan Results

In order to get the best spray tanning results, whether manual or automated, you must prepare appositely. The process of preparing for spray to exfoliation, moisturization, hydration, and even avoidance of certain activities like waxing.

It is important to get your spray tan at least eight hours before an important social event. This is how long you will need for the tan to set and mature. Additionally, you want to schedule manicures and pedicures well before going in for your spray tan. And no waxing or shaving within 24 hours of spray tanning.

The next step in the preparation process is skincare. It is important to fully exfoliate your skin before you go in for a spray tan session. In fact, it is recommended to exfoliate your skin once a day for three days before you get a spray tan. It is important to hydrate and moisturize as much as possible for up to week before your session.

Eight hours before your spray tan session, it is important to take a shower so that you can balance out the natural pH levels in your skin.

How to Use an Automated Spray Tan Booth

On the day of your automated spray tanning session, there are some things you need to do and some things you need to avoid. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get the best results using an automatic spray tan booth:

ON THE DAY OF YOUR SESSION:

Do not apply makeup, heavy lotions, perfume, or deodorant. Basically, you want nothing on your skin that can affect the results of the spray tan. If you do have anything on your skin, bring makeup remover wipes and bath wipes to the tanning salon so you can remove it prior to your session.

Be sure to wear loose and comfortable clothing to the tanning salon, including non-restrictive shoes. It’s better to wear flip-flops than sneakers.

UPON ENTERING YOUR ROOM:

Once you enter the automated spray tanning booth room, you will have full privacy to prepare for your session. Many people choose to wear a swimsuit or undergarments, but you are perfectly permitted to tan in the nude. If you prefer to spray tan in a bathing suit or underwear, be sure to choose garments that you don’t mind staining. In fact, you could purchase a dark swimsuit and reserve it just for spray tanning sessions!

Before stepping inside the automated spray tanning booth, remove all clothes and jewelry, however, most people keep their wedding rings on.

If your hair is long, it is recommended to pull it up so that you tan the back of your neck and shoulders.

NOW YOU ARE READY TO STEP INSIDE THE BOOTH!

Step into the center of the automated tanning booth. Here, you will be at the perfect distance between the nozzles.

There may be markings on the floor inside of the booth directing you on where to stand and in which direction, but most automatic spray tan booths are designed with a prerecorded, automated voice system that instructs you on what to do.

The system will also instruct you to stand shoulder width apart, raise your arms in the air, and spread your fingers apart wide. At some point in the session, the voice system may prompt you to ball your hands into a fist to get full knuckle exposure.

After you are in your position, the voice system should then commence the tanning session plus continue to instruct you on how to continue modifying your stance and position within the booth. It is important to keep good posture during your spray tanning session to ensure the most balanced application.

Be sure to keep your eyes and mouth shut at all times. You are welcome to use nose plugs and eye goggles. If you like. Do not squint or squeeze your eyes shut, as this can cause on the even coloration. Just keep a neutral and relaxed facial expression. As the commands you to switch positions, be sure to do so quickly. At the end of the session, the booth vents will dry your spray tan. During this stage of the process, be sure to hold very still.

When the session is over, the doors will open. Do not try to open the doors beforehand. Overall, just listen closely and follow directions, and your spray tan results will be brilliant!

AFTER YOU GET A SPRAY TAN:

Wait at least 6 hours before taking a shower. Do not be alarmed to see a lot of color come off in the shower–this is just the initial bronzers and is perfectly normal! Just avoid scrubbing hard and don’t take a really long or hot shower. Always use a fresh blade for shaving.

Out of the shower, pat dry lightly with a towel. Do not rub the towel all over your body to dry off. Be sure to fully moisturize!

Avoid exercise and water-based activities, or anything that causes perspiration for several hours after your spray tan. Avoid swimming pools and hot tubs because chlorine will fade spray tans.

Don’t get a wax for at least 24 hours after your spray tanning appointment.

Don’t panic about darkness in the creases of your neck, underarms, knees, and other areas of your body. This is normal and will blend in after a shower. If they don’t, see our blog about fixing a bad spray tan.

Unsafe Tanning Practices You Should Stop Doing Immediately

Everybody, for the most part, shares the same interest of self-preservation, both in terms of health and overall survival. When it comes to tanning, whether indoors, outdoors, or artificially, it is important to avoid doing anything that can put these best interests in jeopardy.

Continue reading to learn about the most common types of unsafe tanning practices, plus some safer alternatives that work just as well.

Risky Tanning Practices and How to Avoid Them

Not Wearing Eye Protection

Your eyesight is arguably one of the most vital senses. As someone who values eyesight, it is important that you always protect your eyes when in the sun or when using a tanning bed. It is also important to protect the delicate areas around your eyes, where skin is thinner and more sensitive. In the natural sun, wear sunglasses or a hat with a long visor to keep your eyes covered.

At the tanning salon, you have the option of using the industry-standard eye cover stickers, which are free, effective, and stay in place throughout your entire session, or you can choose to purchase a pair of reusable eye goggles.

Forgoing Sunscreen

Many people wrongly assume that sunscreen application is not necessary before using a tanning bed. However, whether you’re tanning in the natural sun or an indoor tanning bed, sunscreen is a vital element of the tanning process. You can still get a suntan with sunscreen on! After you have a tan, it is important to continue applying sunscreen before going in the sun or visiting the tanning salon.

Tanning Too Much Too Soon

All of us can be guilty of wanting something too much and all at once. But when it comes to tanning, whether indoors, out in the sun, or with a self-tanning product, the too-much-too-soon philosophy is not a compatible one. Self-tanning products contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which in high concentrations can cause skin irritations like acne, rashes, rosacea, and allergic contact dermatitis. It can also cause more serious side effects like dizziness, coughing, and even fainting.

Tanning too often in the tanning bed or natural sun can lead to serious skin conditions and diseases, including severe sunburn, tanning bed rash, melanoma, and other cancerous health concerns. It can also cause hair damage and generate mild consequences like dry, leathery skin and dull complexion. Read your product labels for manufacturer recommendations, and consult with your doctor about how often and how long you can tan.

Falling Asleep While Tanning

Many people like to take a little nap when tanning, but in most cases, this is not a practice that comes highly recommended. When outdoors, sunbathing in the natural sun for extended periods of time can be damaging to your skin, eyes, and even your overall health. Falling asleep on the beach or poolside can lead to serious sunburns and similar types of sun or skin damage.

Tanning salon beds are a different story. They automatically shut off after your time is up, so if you fall asleep during the session, you will not be at risk of overexposure. However, if you own your own tanning bed that doesn’t have an automatic shut off feature, falling asleep inside can pose several risks. Overall, avoid falling asleep while tanning to be safe.

Tanning While Taking Prescribed Medication

Certain medications, even some over-the-counter medicines, can trigger bad reactions upon exposure to UV light. One of the most common side effects of tanning on prescription drugs is photosensitivity, or a heightened vulnerability to UVA and UVB rays. This can lead to severe sunburn sensations, blistering, and eczema-like patches on the skin. If you are currently prescribed medication, always check with your doctor before using a tanning bed or exposing yourself to the outdoor sun for prolonged periods of time.
