Before Spray Tanning

The process to achieving a long-lasting faux tan starts before your spray tanning appointment. Skin care is vital to the outcome of your spray tan. Routine cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing are key elements to beautiful healthy skin. If your skin is not healthy, it will not respond well to spray tanning. Improper or negligent skin care will result in streaky, uneven color that quickly fades. Aside from everyday skin care, it is important to do a few things before your spray tan session to help promote lasting color. Here are some tips to go by:

• Exfoliate your skin every day for three days prior to your appointment.

• Get all waxing appointments in at least 24 hours before your appointment. This will prevent an unappealing dark pore look.

• Shower 8 hours before your appointment, and not RIGHT before it. The skin needs to settle and get its natural pH balance restored for a spray tan to do its best on your skin.

• Do not use heavy body lotions on the day of your spray tan.

• Wear loose fitting clothing (the least fabric-to-skin contact clothing possible) and shoes to prevent post-tanning lines and streaking. Perfect ensemble: Loose t-shirt dress and flip-flops.

• Do not wear deodorant or foundation. It will cause white spots and uneven color.

After Spray Tanning

Once you have completed your spray tan appointment, there are important steps to take afterwards to ensure you get the best results possible, and that last. Small mistakes can mean the difference between a flawless color scheme and a streaky, splotchy look. Use these tips to get the best results from your spray tanning session:

• Wear the paper panties provided by the salon for at least 3-4 hours. Regular panties will give you lines.

• Ask the tanning technician to give you DETAILED instructions for post-spray tanning. Every spray tan is different depending on the preferences of the client and their skin type. One type of tan may call for an immediate shower, whereas another might wash away that soon.

• Be sure to shower properly. Avoid steamy hot showers and use lukewarm water instead. And do not use body washes or gels that leave a residue on your skin, like the ones that “deeply moisturize” or provide aroma therapy. Use basic, natural products. (i.e. Method Pure Naked Body Wash®, 18 oz. – $6)

• Moisturize properly. Moisturizing is one of the key elements to maintaining and extending your spray tan, but the wrong moisturizer will do more harm than good. Avoid oil-based lotions, as these will cause your color to slip right off. Instead, opt for basic, unscented oil-free lotion. (i.e. Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion®, 16 oz. – $12)

• Use backup tanning products for your face and hands. This is because these are the areas that tend to fade first due to excessive washing. Invest is a high-quality self-tanning product for the face, and use it likewise on your hands. Face tanners are lighter in color, so you can still achieve an even look when using them on your hands too. Just wipe away nails, palms, and cuticles to avoid discoloration.

• Steer clear of excessive sweating for 5 to 10 days. This includes exercise, sun bathing, and anything else that makes you sweat. For those who cannot avoid gym time (understandably), there are products you can use to help reduce the effects of sweat on your spray tan. (i.e. St. Tropez Gradual In-Shower Tanning Lotion®, 6 oz. – $25)

• Exfoliate every few days with a gentle exfoliating product. This will ensure the tan fades evenly and doesn’t build up in certain areas. Opt for a gentle formula, steering clear of oatmeal and salt scrubs.

How Does Our Skin Tan?

Your body’s natural ability to change color and tan is nothing more than a biological defense mechanism to protect your skin against the sunlight’s (or tanning lamps) ultraviolet radiation. When our skin darkens from sun exposure, it’s attempting to reduce the amount of UV penetration into our skin cells. This helps prevent sun burn, skin cancer, RNA damage, DNA damage, and more.

Although our skin has this built-in defense system against UV radiation, it is strongly encouraged to use tanning products, moisturizers, and skin care treatments after tanning to further protect your skin against ultraviolet damage. Melanocytes and Melanin

Your body goes through a process called melanogenesis to darken the skin. During melanogenesis, cells called melanocytes produce a pigment called melanin, which makes the skin change color under UV exposure. These specialized cells make two different kinds of melanin: pheomelanin and eumelanin. Pheomelanin renders the skin red, such as a sun burn, whereas eumelanin renders the skin a dark brown color. These pigments protect your skin by absorbing UV solar radiation upon exposure. It is also the body’s means to repair any skin damage that has already taken place. The darker you get, the more your body is trying to repair and protect your skin.

Fading Tans

Melanogenesis is not a process that shows immediate results. Generally, the skin will turn pink or red during initial exposure, and then change to a darker tan or brown color several hours later. The more sun exposure, the more melanin your body will continue to produce in order to repair and protect your skin. This is why we often look darker one or two days after enjoying the sun (or tanning bed). But once sun exposure begins to die down, your growing skin cells push the darkened skin upward, and your tan begins to fade as dead skin is exfoliated more and more.

Safe Tanning

It is important to learn the proper tanning course for your skin type before hitting the sun too hard. There are several tanning lotions, moisturizers, and skin care products that not only enhance and extend your tan, but also enrich and protect your skin year-round. Tanning Bed Basics for Beginner Tanners

Tanning beds are a wonderful alternative to outdoor sun-tanning. However, there are a few things you should know before stepping into one for the first time. Indoor tanning is much different than tanning in the sun, but it has several advantages; the best of which being that it provides a real tan almost instantly. But in order to benefit from all that indoor tanning has to offer, you must know how to tan safely and care for your skin effectively.

Continue reading to learn some basic indoor tanning information, as well as, a few tips you will need to protect yourself and get the most out of your experience.

Tanning Safety

The first aspect to remember when it comes to indoor tanning is safety. Not only must you use proper accessories to better protect your body from over-exposure, you must also choose a responsible agenda that matches your skin tone and type. Tanning salons will provide most safety accessories at a very low cost, or sometimes free upon request. These include eye goggles and eye stickers. The eye goggles used for indoor tanning are very small, and designed to cover only the lower eye lid. This protects your eyes while preventing an obvious tan line. The stickers are used for the exact same purpose, but rather than a pair of goggles, they are small reflective stickers that safely cover your eyes while tanning. These accessories, if not free, are extremely cheap; generally between 25 cents and a dollar. You can also purchase your own to re-use at a relatively low price.

Another aspect of tanning safely involves your skin tone and type. Keep in mind, if you do not tan in the natural sun, you will likely not tan from a bed either. If you have sensitive, fair skin, you will need a gentle and slow tanning course; whereas, if your skin tends to tan well, you can probably move up the tanning bed scale a bit faster. Along with a proper tanning course, you will need to protect your skin before and after tanning. This means using sun screen all over your body beforehand, and then applying a quality post-tanning moisturizer on a routine basis.

You will do well to know that there are several types of tanning products available to assist and protect your skin through the tanning process. Be sure to have a tanning consultant asses your skin type in order for them to recommend the safest and most effective course of tanning for you. All of these tips and more will better prepare you for fun, relaxing, and effective tanning!
