Understanding How Tanning Affects Your Skin

To appreciate the importance of post-tanning skincare, it’s essential to understand how tanning works. Whether achieved through natural sunlight, tanning beds, or sunless tanning products, the process can affect your skin in different ways.

Natural Sun Exposure

When exposed to natural sunlight, your skin produces melanin, the pigment responsible for your tan. This reaction is your body’s defense mechanism against harmful UV rays. While a golden hue is often desirable, prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Tanning Beds Versus Sunless Tanning

Tanning beds use artificial UV light to stimulate melanin production, often resulting in a quicker tan compared to natural sunlight. However, the concentrated UV exposure can cause significant skin damage if not managed properly.

On the other hand, sunless tanning products contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to create a tan. This method avoids UV damage but requires diligent maintenance to keep your tan looking fresh.

Crafting a Good Post-Tanning Skin Care Routine

Once you’ve achieved your desired tan, it’s crucial to follow a comprehensive skincare routine to keep your skin healthy and your tan vibrant.

Step 1: Hydration is Key

Tanning can dehydrate your skin, making it essential to replenish moisture. Use a hydrating body lotion or oil daily to keep your skin soft and supple. Look for products containing aloe vera or hyaluronic acid, which are excellent for retaining moisture.

Step 2: Gentle Exfoliation

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and prevents your tan from looking patchy. Opt for a gentle exfoliant to avoid stripping away your tan too quickly. Aim to exfoliate 2-3 times a week, focusing on areas prone to dryness, like elbows and knees.

Step 3: Sun Protection

Even after tanning, protecting your skin from further UV damage is vital. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every time you go outdoors. This not only protects your skin but also prolongs the life of your tan.

Tailoring Your Routine to Different Tanning Methods

Different tanning methods require specific aftercare to maintain and enhance your glow. Whether you are a sunbather, sunless tan fan, or tanning bed lover, these tips will help tailor your routine:

Sunbathers’ Care Tips

If you love sunbathing, ensure you’re drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. Use after-sun lotions with cooling ingredients like aloe vera to soothe any potential sunburn. Moisturize frequently to prevent peeling and extend your tan’s lifespan.

Sunless Tanners’ Care Tips

For those using sunless tanners, maintain your tan by applying a gradual tanning lotion between applications. Avoid long baths or showers, as they can cause your tan to fade faster. Pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing to retain the tan.

Tanning Bed Users’ Care Tips

Tanning bed enthusiasts should focus on using products specifically designed for after tanning bed care. These products often contain ingredients that help repair and nourish the skin. Additionally, limit your sessions to avoid overexposure to UV rays.

Addressing Common Post-Tanning Skin Issues

Post-tanning can bring about several skin concerns, but with the right care, you can address them effectively. Here are some common issues and tips for abating them:

Sunburn – Despite precautions, sunburn can happen. If you experience sunburn, apply aloe vera gel or a soothing after-sun lotion to calm the skin. Cool compresses and staying hydrated can also help speed up recovery.

Dryness – Dry skin is a common issue post-tanning. Incorporate a rich moisturizer into your daily routine to combat dryness. Ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil are excellent for locking in moisture.

Premature Aging – Prolonged UV exposure can accelerate skin aging. To combat this, use products containing antioxidants like vitamin C and E, which help neutralize free radicals. Regular application of sunscreen is also crucial in preventing further damage.

Essential Post-Tanning Do’s:

  • Hydrate from Within – Drinking plenty of water is essential to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day to support your skin’s natural moisture balance.
  • Use Tan-Extending Products – Tan-extending lotions can help maintain your glow for longer. These products typically contain ingredients that gradually enhance your tan while moisturizing your skin.
  • Avoid Hot Showers and Baths –  Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and a quicker fade of your tan. Opt for lukewarm water when showering and keep showers short to preserve your tan.

Post-Tanning Don’ts:

  • Don’t Skip Moisturizing – Skipping moisturizer can lead to dry, flaky skin and a patchy tan. Make moisturizing a non-negotiable step in your daily routine to keep your skin smooth and your tan even.
  • Don’t Forget Sunscreen – Even with a tan, your skin is still susceptible to UV damage. Never skip sunscreen and reapply every two hours when outdoors to protect your skin and prolong your tan.
  • Don’t Over-Exfoliate – While exfoliation is essential, overdoing it can strip away your tan. Stick to a gentle exfoliation routine to maintain your glow without causing damage.

Conclusion

Taking care of your skin post-tanning is essential for maintaining a beautiful, healthy glow. By following a dedicated skincare routine, you can prolong your tan and keep your skin in top condition. Remember, hydration, gentle exfoliation, and sun protection are key components of any post-tanning skincare regimen.

Tanning lotions can be a safe and effective way to add a golden hue to your skin, but proper application is key to an even, natural-looking tan. Whether you’re stepping into a tanning bed or basking under the sun, mastering the art of tanning lotion application can make all the difference. Choosing the Right Tanning Lotion

Selecting the right tanning lotion is the first step towards a successful faux tan. Here are some factors to consider:

Understanding Your Skin Type

Just like with regular sunscreen, different tanning creams are formulated for various skin types. Fair skin may burn easily, while darker skin tones might tan more quickly. Be sure to choose a tanning lotion that matches your skin’s needs, whether that includes a lower SPF for more sensitive skin or a higher SPF to start with if you tan easily.

Tanning Bed Lotion vs. Sun Tanning Lotion

Tanning bed creams are designed to enhance the tanning process and often contain ingredients that promote melanin production. On the other hand, sun tanning lotions provide protection from UV rays while aiding in tanning development. Make sure you use the correct type of lotion for your tanning method.

Selecting the Appropriate SPF Level

The SPF level in a tanning lotion determines the amount of UVB protection it offers. Higher SPF levels provide more protection, and some tanning creams offer SPF as high as 30 or 50. For protection against UVA rays, look for a “broad-spectrum” formula.

How to Prep Your Skin for Tanning Cream

Proper preparation of your skin is crucial to ensuring a smooth and even application.

Exfoliation for Smooth Skin

Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to slough off dead skin cells. Pay particular attention to rough areas like elbows, knees, and the tops of your feet. This step will prevent the tanning lotion from clinging to dry patches, which can lead to an uneven tan.

Moisturizing Dry Areas

After exfoliating, apply a moisturizer to any areas that tend to be drier. This will help the skin absorb the tanning cream more evenly and prevent these areas from becoming too dark.

The Process of Applying Tanning Lotion

Now that you’re ready to apply the tanning lotion, here’s how to do it effectively for a seamless tan.

▶ Start with a Small Amount

Less is more when it comes to tanning lotion. Begin with a small dollop and add more as needed. Smearing on too much at once can lead to over-application and an unnatural, uneven tan.

▶ Use Circular Motions for Even Coverage

Apply the product using small, circular motions. This technique helps distribute the product evenly and ensures you don’t miss any spots.

▶ Pay Attention to Elbows, Knees, and Hands

These areas are notorious for looking too dark after tanning. Use a minimal amount of product or a separate, lighter tanning lotion designed for these body parts, applying it with a gentle touch.

Post-Application Tips

After you’ve applied the tanning product, there are a few crucial steps to ensure your tan sets perfectly.

Allow Time for the Lotion to Dry

Wait at least ten minutes for the tanning lotion to absorb and dry completely before getting dressed or getting into water. Failure to do this can result in streaks, an uneven tan, and stained clothing.

Hydrate the Skin Regularly

Keep your skin hydrated to maintain your tan for as long as possible. Drink plenty of water, and apply a good moisturizer daily to keep the color from fading too quickly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some common mistakes and how to avoid them when using tanning creams:

Applying Too Much: Start with a little and build up. You can always add more, but it’s hard to take any away.

Skipping Exfoliation: Smooth skin is key for an even tan, so exfoliate thoroughly before applying your lotion.

Forgetting to Moisturize: Hydrated skin means an even tan. Moisturize deep, dry areas to ensure uniform color.

Not Waiting for Lotion to Dry: Patience is a virtue here. Wait for your lotion to dry to avoid issues later.

Using the Wrong SPF: Match your SPF to your skin type for the best results. Protect yourself first, then focus on tanning.

Missing Blending Steps: Be extra careful around elbows, knees, and hands to blend properly.

Product Recommendations

For those looking for quality tanning products, consider brands like Australian Gold, known for its unique combinations of exotic ingredients and sun protection, Swedish Beauty, which offers a wide range of intensifier and bronzing lotions, and Hempz, which focuses on all-natural, moisturizing formulas.

Key Takeaways

Applying tanning lotion can seem like a simple step in your beauty routine, but following these guidelines will help you avoid common pitfalls and achieve a radiant tan that lasts. Remember to always prioritize skincare and protection even when you’re looking to achieve that desired beachy hue. Happy tanning, and enjoy your sun-kissed glow!

Tanning Instructions for People With Body Piercings

Fashion is something that virtually everyone can relate to, whether man, woman, or child. One of the longest-standing fashion trends for both genders are surface piercings. Body piercings can be dated back all the way to the beginning of humankind, from ancient Egyptians with stretched ear lobes and lower lips, to ornamental tribal piercings and similar body modifications. Although these civilizations primarily used piercings and stretches for spiritual and cultural purposes, you can see these same trends in today’s society as a form of fashion.

Today, we have the technology and medicine to ensure that surface piercing is safe; however, it is up to you to ensure that your pierced skin remains in good care while it heals. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is neglect post-piercing care.

Not only must you keep your piercing clean and intact, you must also protect it from excessive heat and sun exposure. This includes taking certain precautions when tanning, whether in a bed or out in the sun.

Continue reading to learn how to protect your body piercings when you go tanning.

Surface Piercings vs. Regular Piercings

Surface piercings are different from traditional ones since they do not go all the way through the skin and out on the other side; much like ear and belly button piercings. Surface piercings are often seen on the face, by the upper lip or on the cheek. They are also commonly seen on abdomens, arms, and more.

It is important to protect regular pierced areas when they are new, but surface piercings require even more consideration when tanning. Basically, you will treat a surface piercing the same as you would a regular one when tanning, but it is important to really take some extra precaution so that it does not get infected.

How to Tan With Piercings

If your piercing is very new, you should avoid tanning and sun exposure altogether. Wait at least a week before tanning to ensure that no infection has formed as a result of the actual appointment. If you were to get a sunburn around your pierced skin, it would take even longer for the piercing to heal, plus cause more pain and discomfort, as well as permanent scarring. It also opens you up to a higher risk of post-piercing infection.

Whether you have a surface or regular piercing, the first step to take before tanning is to clean the area thoroughly. Use an antibacterial soap, clean water, and a clean rag to eliminate any dirt or germs. Instead of soap, you can also use antiseptic liquids like hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol. Once it is clean, be sure that you do not get any sunblock, tanning lotion, or oil near the area. This can also cause infection, pain, swelling, and discomfort.

To avoid sunburn and product contamination, cover your pierced skin with a bandage. Just be sure that the adhesive from the bandage does not get into the hole of your piercing. For even more security, consider covering the bandage with another bandage, like medical gauze or a clean washcloth. In fact, this is recommended for larger surface piercings.

Moisturized skin is happy skin; and happy skin maintains its complexion much easier than dry, brittle skin. For this reason, moisturizing on a regular basis after tanning is key to maintaining a long-lasting bronze glow. Not sure which lotions are for post-tanning use? Look for full-body lotions and creams that contain the right ingredients for post-tanning skin care.

Here is a list of common lotion ingredients that do the job well:

☑ B Complex
☑ Vitamin C
☑ Vitamin E
☑ A Good Oil (Argan, Olive, Rosehip, Jojoba, etc.)
☑ Glycerin
☑ Hyaluronic Acid
☑ Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a great, all-natural skin soothing ointment that can be used to soothe and reduce inflammation. Although aloe is not necessarily a tan extender, it is a good post-tanning option for those who suspect they may have got too much sun or UV-exposure.

How Does Skin Produce Vitamin D?

Now that summer is over and winter is here, we might all be experiencing some Vitamin D deficiency. This can be a bit concerning since Vitamin D is an important factor in preventative human health. Combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, Vitamin D can provide health benefits in a natural way to decrease susceptibility to certain health threats like cancer, heart disease, and more. Also called the “sunshine vitamin”, UV-B from sunlight is the most effective and naturally-occurring source for Vitamin D. For these reasons, we can be grateful that our bodies produce it naturally.

Continue reading to learn the basic process of Vitamin D production in the skin, as well as, alternative sources for Vitamin D.

Indianapolis Tanning Salon 317-257-8262
Indianapolis Tanning Salon 317-257-8262

Vitamin D Production in Skin

Once your skin is exposed to sunlight, which contains ultra violet-B rays, it takes what it needs and de-metabolizes the rest. Too much Vitamin D can cause the body to over-process calcium, another vital mineral for human health. This is why sunless tanning should be done safely and responsibly.

Sunlight-produced Vitamin D protects against this potential danger, since the skin naturally defends itself by de-metabolizing any excess UVB.  Generally, 10-20 minutes in the sun each day is all you need! This of course depends on the strength of the sunrays and the darkness of your skin. Darker skin and weaker sunrays may require longer sun exposure for optimal production levels.

Vitamin D Alternatives

The sun is the best and most guaranteed natural source for Vitamin D production and sufficiency. However, for those that cannot be exposed to the sun for health concerns, there are alternative sources that can provide the same benefits. Many health stores offer Vitamin D supplements that come in the form of pills, capsules, powders, drinks, gummies, and more. Although not natural, these alternatives are easily accessible and affordable. Talk to your doctor before mixing any OTC dietary supplements with current medications or health conditions.

What is an After-Tanning Lotion?

In the tanning industry, there are endless skin care products to choose from. Whether new to tanning or not, the vast selection of lotions, oils, moisturizers, balms, and creams can leave you fully confused. Understanding the differences among them all can be a feat in itself, especially if you do not even know what the product actually is to begin with. This is common with after-tanning lotions.

Many have never even heard the term after-tanning lotion, let alone know what it is intended to be used for. However, after-tanning lotions are vital to the ultimate results you get from tanning, as well as, your overall skin quality and protection. So it is in your best interest to understand them and use them if you plan on tanning in the future.

Post-Tanning Care

The number one rule to post-tanning care is moisturizing. You see, your tan changes the pigment on the top layers of your skin. As your body continues its growth cycles, your skin cells molt away and get replaced with new ones, which is why a tan will eventually fade overtime. To slow down the rate of a fading tan, your skin needs moisture, and using moisturizing lotions will help maintain skin cells by keeping them soft and moist. See our blog, “

After-Tanning Lotions

An after-tanning lotion is exactly what it says; a lotion that is meant to be used after you tan. But why use them? What do they do? Well, a post-tanning lotion contains special ingredients formulated to protect the skin from premature skin cell loss, which can result in a fading tan, as well as, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and more. Such ingredients commonly include vitamins, oils, fatty acids, antioxidants, and beta carotene. Less common ingredients include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera. Additionally, after-tan lotions extend the luster and glow of your tan, giving you a long-lasting complexion.

Not only do after-tanning lotions protect and nourish your skin, they can also save you money on future tanning and sun tan lotions. When your tan lasts longer, your tanning salon visits will be less frequently, which keeps money in your pocket. Moreover, you spend less money on bronzers and oils since you use will eventually use less as your tanning results get better. See our blog, “Top-Recommended Post-Tanning Moisturizers” to learn what your best options are on the market.

Also Consider Tan Extenders

Another option for post-tanning care is to use a tan extending product. Tan extenders are the best kept secret in the insider world of expert tanning, and are now widely available at any local tanning salon or convenient store. They don’t just extend your color, they make it look better! A popular and recommended tan extender is Swedish Beauty® Endless Moisturizer Tan Extender.

Change Your Diet to Improve Your Skin

If you want your skin to look and feel better, you have to start from the inside. That means eating right and including the proper vital nutrients in your diet. These include fundamental minerals, omega fatty acids, fish oils, proteins, and antioxidants, all of which will help you maintain fresh, younger-looking skin. Here is a list of such ingredients, and the best sources for each:

☙ Antioxidants

There are plenty of foods that contain ample quantities of antioxidants, which helps your skin rejuvenate. These include Vitamin C, grape extract, green tea, beta glucan, and kelp. Beta glucan is a type of fiber that can be found in wheat, rye, sorghum, barley, oats, shitake mushrooms, seaweed, and algae.

☙ Omega-Enriched Elements

Omega-enriched foods and ingredients help to keep skin hydrated. You can find these omega fatty acids in olive oil, chia seed oil, shea butter, plum oil, and passion fruit oil. You can also find them in fish, fish oil, flaxseed, nuts, leafy greens, and more.

☙ Replenishers

Natural skin replenishers keep your skin looking revitalized and glowing. Some we have already mentioned under omega-enriched elements since some plant oils also double as skin replenishers, such as chia seed and fruit oils. Other natural ingredients to add to your diet for skin replenishing purposes are plant-based ceramides (Phytoceramides) and hyaluronic acid, which can be found avocados, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, wheat germ, brown rice, spinach, and beets.

☙ Brighteners

To brighten up your skin, modify your diet to incorporate bearberry, mulberry, and arbutin. Arbutin is a glycoside and natural skin brightener that can be found in wheat and pear skins. Other natural skin brighteners you can eat include carrots, sesame seeds, oranges, sardines, yogurt, kale, and lima beans.

☙ Soothers

Skin soothers are necessary to keep redness and swelling at bay, whether from too much sun, sweat, or acne. Foods like licorice can help, as well as, oats and willow germ. Chamomile and cucumber can also help soothe skin.

☙ Skin Restorers

To help your skin continue to restore itself, or to give your face a fresh upgrade, include foods with natural retinols, peptides, and niacinamides in them. Peptides include meats, milk, eggs, fish, and soybean, while retinols can be found in liver, mackerel, and salmon. Niacinamides also include meats, milk, eggs, fish, but also include green vegetables and cereal grains.

☙ Acne Minimizers

If you want your skin to combat frustrating acne breakouts with more vigor, include foods with salicylic acid in them. This is easy to do since it includes a diverse list of produce, such as green olives, chicory, capsicum, chili peppers, endive, gherkins, radish, tomatoes, pineapple, apricots, guava, grape, cranberry, and much more. It also includes a wide variety of nuts, such as Brazilian, pistachios, almonds, peanuts, water chestnuts, pine, macadamia, and much more.

Sunblock is Not Just For Summer

Many people assume that summer is the only season that requires outdoor protection from UV-rays, however, sun protection should be a year-round effort. Most people associate sunburns with hot summer weather, but the truth is that your skin can also burn in cold, overcast weather. You see, the sun emits two types of rays: UVB and UVA rays. Both of these UV-rays pass through clouds, mist, and fog, delivering an unnoticeable level of UV exposure.

This is a concern for those without any sun protection on their skin since the potential to burn from overexposure is much higher. As a result, some of the worst sunburns happen when least expected. Furthermore, UVA rays are not just from direct sun; they can also come from natural light through glass, windows, clouds, mist, and fog. This is why it is strongly recommended to incorporate sun protection into your daily skin care regime.

The ultra violet radiation emitted by the sun is what changes the color of your skin, either into a tan or a burn. UVB rays are the immediate cause of skin color changes, while UVA rays are the ones that penetrate deep into the skin. But UVA rays are not just from direct sun, they are also a product of natural light through glass, windows, clouds, mist, and fog. They are also the same rays used in tanning beds.

How to Apply Sunblock on Cloudy Days

Depending on the type of cloud, only a certain level of UVA rays emit through and penetrate the skin. Dark grey clouds allow less UVA exposure than white, fluffy ones. Either way, sunscreen is a must. On days with dark clouds, a milder sunscreen will do, but on days with fluffy white clouds, choose a stronger sunblock. And don’t forget that elevation has an effect on sun exposure too!

Regardless of which type of clouds the day has in store, if you are going to be higher up in elevation, say on a mountain or hills, then you will need a stronger sunblock and more coverage. The higher you are, the close you are to the sun’s UVA rays, which is why it makes sense that you are more vulnerable to a sunburn at higher elevations. The same goes for participating in outdoor winter activities. You can still burn in these conditions, so sufficient coverage is a must.

Recommended Skin Care Routines For Oily, Dry, and Combination Skin

Indoor Tanning and Skin Care Products 317-257-8262

Indoor Tanning and Skin Care Products 317-257-8262

You are probably aware that there are various skin types, and hopefully you have figured out which skin type you have. This understanding is an integral part of proper skin care. If you are unsure which skin type you are, simply read our blog entitled, “Which Skin Type are You?” to learn how to test your skin. Once you administer your test, you will be more up-to-date with your particular skin qualities. As a reminder from that blog, the three primary skin types are oily, dry, and combination skin. Each skin type has unique attributes, so they require a separate approach to skin care. A person with oily skin would not want to use the same skin care regime as a person with dry skin, and vice versa. So continue reading to learn some incredible skin care tips for each type, and then get started on a journey towards healthier, more luminous skin!

Oily Skin

You likely have oily skin if your face begins to produce new skin oils within a few hours after washing your face in the morning. Although oily skin is more resistant to sun exposure, it is more prone to blemishes and acne outbreaks. However, it is easy to care for since moisture loss is not your problem. However, moisturized skin does not have to be shiny or excessively oily. Here are some tips for cleansing and caring for your oily skin:

☺ Avoid oil-based skin care products and heavy makeup usage.

☺ Use a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening, everyday.

☺ Use an alcohol-free, salicylic acid medicated face toner after every wash. Try Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads®.

☺ Use a daily moisturizer that is oil-free and at least 30 SPF. Try Neutrogena Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 35®.

Dry Skin

If your skin feels dry just a few hours after applying moisturizer, or shows visible signs of flaking, you likely have dry skin. Fortunately, dry skin is simple to treat so long as you have some dedication. Here is what you should do if you have dry skin:

☺ Use a gentle face cleanser. Avoid maximum strength and abrasive formulas. Instead, opt for a soft cream or foam cleanser.

☺ Only wash your face with cleanser at night before bedtime. In the morning, just rinse with clean water to retain more moisture in your skin.

☺ Apply a hyaluronic acid product before you apply your moisturizer. It is essentially a booster to your moisturizer.

☺ Use moisturizers that contain phospholipids, cholesterol, and essential fatty acids.

☺ For anti-aging purposes, use a quality retinol product in the morning and evening, like Retinol Pro Advanced Regenerating Formula®. This can irritate sensitive skin, so be cautious when using.

☺ Always test new products cautiously to see if they dry out or irritate your skin. Immediately discontinue use if they cause more dryness or irritation.

Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, you can take comfort in knowing that it can be the easiest skin type to care for. Combination skin care is all about finding the happy mediums with your skin care products, including makeup. Regular cleansing, spot treatment for acne or blemishes, and proper moisturizing is all it takes to maintain healthy combination skin. Here are some more tips to keep in mind:

☺ Use a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening.

☺ Try not to wear makeup for many hours. Wash off makeup as soon as possible. Never sleep in makeup!

☺ Use an alcohol-free, salicylic acid medicated face toner 3 times per week. Try Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads®.

If you want to give your skin the best possible care, it is important that you know which skin type you have. Skin types are known to change as we get older, so it is common for someone to assume they have the same skin type they did as an adolescent. If it has been years since you have really reexamined the quality and condition of your skin, your skin care routine and anti-aging plan may not match your true skin type any more. Continue reading to learn how to identify your true skin type.

3 Primary Skin Types

There are infinite variations of skin types, but the average person fits into one of three primary categories: oily, dry, and combination skin. Within these 3 primary skin types, there are various levels of being affected. It is possible to add a fourth category for sensitive skin, however, sensitive skin is really just other versions of dry or combination skin. If you are unsure which skin type best matches your skin, just look for the common signs of each.

Oily Skin – It is common for skin to feel oily by the end of the day. However, if you can feel oil on your facial skin by morning or mid-day, your skin type is likely oily. Oily skin is more prone to acne, and can cause an undesirable sheen. On the other hand, it generally offers better sun protection. With proper skin care products and practices, oily skin can be easily managed, and even reduced.

Dry Skin – Dry skin is evident by signs of flaking, cracking, redness, irritation, and heightened sensitivity. If you skin experiences these symptoms when you use products on it, you likely have dry skin.

Combination Skin – Combination skin types are simply those that exhibit both oily and dry symptoms. Certain parts of the skin can be oily, while other areas are dry. Some areas can be more sensitive than others, and so forth. If your skin fits this description, you likely have combination skin.

How to Find Your True Skin Type

To truly identify your skin type, you must first stop using any harmful products for several weeks. This includes alcohol-based products or products that use menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus oils, citrus juices, lavender, witch hazel, and other harsh ingredients. Also cut out fragrances and scented products, thick moisturizers (unless you have severely dry skin), abrasives, harsh cleansers, stiff-bristled brushes, and essential oils. After 2 or 3 weeks, your true skin type will begin to show. Now you are ready to do the test and find out once and for all which skin type is yours.

Here’s what to do:

Wash your face with warm water and a mild cleanser.
Pat completely dry.
Apply a gentle, skin-replenishing toner with antioxidants and other essential minerals.
Wait 30 minutes and then look in the mirror and examine your skin.

If your skin is showing signs of oil and shine, you have oily skin.
If your skin is showing signs of dryness and feels tight, you have dry skin.
If your skin is oily in some places and dry in others, you have combination skin.
